Ratings - Golden Compass
Rating: | Price/Power (2/5) This staple is starting to look a little long in the tooth. Countermeasures (0/5) Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades To be fair, while items in our beginner's guide are likely better still, this item started to be outclassed the moment the Hanso Charisma Charm started dropping dramatically, heck, you could even say that happened back when the Flask of Liquid Fire became a thing. Other Points Final Thoughts It will always hold a place in the battledome hall of fame I suppose. Rated on August 28, 2024 |
Rating: | This rating is to intentionally tank the average score for this beginner weapon, as it is now either outclassed by or more expensive than the current Beginner Recommended Constant Attackers. This weapon should not be considered unless it becomes cheaper than the weapons listed there. This rating does not take into account any use for this weapon in 2P leagues. Rated on January 13, 2024 |
Rating: | Overview: The Golden Compass is a cheap and effective, albeit basic, dual duty weapon. The Good: For a cheap price, it matches or overcomes some common cheap weapons, including but not limited to Scroll of Knowledge, Scroll of the Fool, and Scroll of the Wise The Bad: While at first glance the scroll-blocking feature is useful, the dark icons aren't that prevalent at the level you'd be using the Golden Compass at. The Ugly Truth: Despite the small pool of weapons that the Compass is effective against, it provides a cheap insurance policy against the common scrolls, which makes it worthwhile in a cheap diversified set. Rating: | Value 2/3: 9 icons of damage and 12 possible icons for 30k is a great buy. Tactical 5/6: Fares well against other popular dual duties like the scarab ring and oversized maractite rune sword. It beats 3 dual duties that block light, including jhudoras cursed sword, sword of the dead, and ancient gnarled wand. It breaks even against the scroll of knowledge. Its icons are hard to fully block with low-level shields, and it's great in low level/500k set cap battling. However, in low level battling, dark icons are not too common, so it wouldn't be too difficult to slip icons past this weapon. Other 0/1: This weapon is clearly outmatched by the Hanso Charisma Charm, which neopians should be saving to buy (if they don't already own one) before its price inflates further. Rating: | It was not long ago that Golden Compass was the ultimate beginner-to-intermediate level go-to weapon. Back before 9-iconers and greater were available for dirt cheap prices, this item was valued for its powerful attack and its bonus defense. These days, 9-icon weaponry is not quite as special, but still considered entry-level. However, unlike most other 9-icon weapons, Golden Compass offers some defense as well, making it more known for its status as a Dual Duty in the present day. At a current price of ~35k, 11.667 total icons is nothing to scoff at. The low-cost Scroll of Ultranova boasts a slightly better attack using the same icon types, but when the opponent is running Dark icons, Golden Compass becomes the better play. Dark icons are not the most commonly seen, but there are several popular weapons for Golden Compass to feast on: Ring of the Sway, Ramtors Spellbook, Jhudoras Cursed Sword, Ancient Gnarled Wand, Barbat Throwing Star, Scroll of the Fool, and a few others. Cheaper Dual Duties exist, but none can match the offensive output that Golden Compass offers at this price. (Some cheap Dual Duties include Ultimate Negg Hammer and Scarab Ring.) Counter Measures to Golden Compass include Snowager Sword, Elegant Desert Sword, Wanderers Cloak, and Royal Blue Cape. Golden Compass is not as popular as it once was, but it is still a top choice for new battlers thanks to its solid offensive power and added defense. Rated on July 19, 2013 |
Rating: | Price/power (5/5): Icon inflation has made this extremely cheap for what it does. Not that it wasn't affordable and essential to begin with. Tactical (4/5): 9 attacking icons is standard at this level, and having a dark-blocking dual duty really helps. Nothing at this level (except perhaps some of the full armours, but those are ridiculously overpriced) will block all of the icons here. Not doing easily-blocked physical icons also helps. The only thing you really need to watch out for is Studded Leather Cuirass, which reduces this to 3 icons. Oh, and this blocks 2.667 dark icons. Not 3. Still, it could potentially combine with Sophies Magic Hat for even more dark defense. Bonus (1/1): This is possibly the most useful 9-iconer out there. Closing remarks: A must have for low to mid level battlers. This will be the last 9-iconer you have in your set before you move onto more powerful weapons. Rated on December 9, 2012 |
