Rating:

Recommended for: Beginner Battlers
Price at Time of Rating: Less than 1,000 NP

This weapon was originally released as a prize in 2013 for the War for the Obelisk, and had been fairly underpowered for its price. However, it has been mass released as a daily quest prize for the 2023 Quest Log feature, thus becoming dirt cheap and a great beginner weapon!

Strengths:
11 icons of damage for almost free will get you pretty far if you're just starting out in the battledome!

Weaknesses:
At lower pet levels, when you likely don't have a free turn from the level 50 faerie ability Lens Flare yet, you do have to be a bit more careful about your opponent blocking out chunks of your attack. This weapon lacks a bit in icon diversity, though it does do a decent amount of both icon types.

Alternatives:
Hanso Charisma Charm does a little less damage but blocks 100% of incoming dark icons, which can be helpful at all levels of play.

Upgrades include Bundle of Burning Birch Branches and Poisonous Mushroom Tea, which cost more but hit harder and for 3 different icon types.

Keep an eye on our Weapon Recommendations: Beginner article for the most updated list of beginner weapon alternatives!

Notes:
If the Quest Log prize pool ever rotates, then this item’s price may increase. However, it was in the daily quests prize pool for over a month, so there should be a huge supply for a while.

Value 0/3: Since the Scroll of Knowledge is buyable and this has hovered around 300k, it's a bad buy.

Tactical 3/6: I can appreciate the function of this weapon, acting as a beefed up Ramtors Spellbook, and it's not easy to block both light and dark in this volume with shields at this level. However, this loses to too many common dual duties at or below the price range for this weapon including the Golden Compass, Hanso Charisma Charm, Ancient Gnarled Wand, Sword of the Dead, and Jhudoras Cursed Sword.

By using it, you put yourself at risk of being easily outmatched.

Other 1/1: I have no bias here as I did not fight for the sway, but this weapon looks cool and will probably be desirable for galleries in the future, so it may do well economically.

Conclusion: A nice upgrade to Ramtors Spellbook, but there are a lot of new dual duties on the block and this light/dark combo is vulnerable.

Price/Power (3/5)
A fair hunk of icons, as many as a Scroll of Knowledge but more bulk and stupidly cheap since releasing in the daily quests. Still doesn't provide quite as many icons as I would like, but still.

Countermeasures (3/5)
Dark is easy to block using the Hanso Charisma Charm, Light is easy to block with the Parasol of Unfortunate Demise... However, it does provide a harder to block combo then the Scroll of Knowledge due to the fact that people generally won't be carrying both.

Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
I'd get a Hanso Charisma Charm instead. It is just as cheap but comes with added block

Other Points (1 Bonus)
It is retired, and looks really rather fine.

Final Thoughts
At least it is better then the defense giving prizes.

Price/power (1/5): Expensive for what it does. Scroll of Knowledge does the same number of icons for much less.

Tactical (3/5): Mass iconage is useful, but there needs to be slightly more icons. Light is not easily blocked at this level, but Hanso Charisma Charm will easily beat this. Ultimate Negg Hammer will break even. Jhudoras Cursed Sword will come out on top. Even the Golden Compass will beat this by a little bit.

Bonus (0/1): NOOOOO!!! I was hoping for better prizes from a WAR!!!

Closing remarks: One of the better weapons from this war, but it still isn't that great. For the NP you'd be spending on this, you're better off spending a bit more on a Hanso Charisma Charm instead.
