Ratings - Ancient Gnarled Wand
Rating:
1
This weapon will only be rated for Regular 1P/2P use, since it doesn't have any niche or league use.

Price(0/3): Completely worthless. Any neopoint spent on this item would be a waste. While the amount of neopoints isn't insane, it might as well be for this item.
Power(0/5): The amount of icons this weapon does is too low for today's battledome while it barely defends against any icons, defeating the purpose of a dual duty. It'd be better to focus on either attack or defence instead of splitting total icons like this.
Uniqueness(0/2): Dual duties should compromise a bit of attacking power for extra defence or the other way around. This, like many others, is just underpowered.

Overall it's just your average underpowered, useless item. Nothing worth checking out here. Because of that its final rating is 0/10. I can't give a rating of 0 however, so it gets a shameful 1 instead.

At a Glance (1/3):
Harness the hidden powers of this ancient wand to blast your opponent with 8 icons of power, while blocking 3 icons of light. Pretty gnarly.

In-Depth (2/4):
Its offensive power is a bit lacking from the 10-11 icon standard, but it is interesting to use in that:

1) Its total icon count is 11

2) Its offense isn't too easy to completely block with budget shields.

3) Its defense will chip away at a wide variety of budget weaponry, including Sun and Moon Chakram and Scroll of Knowledge, both of which, are the main weapons that set the current standard.

This means that you will probably see many opportunities to use this wand. Its offense synergizes well with other weapons like Barbat Throwing Star; its defense also synergizes with many shields like Sophies Magic Hat and Kiko Skull Pirate Hat. This makes the wand a good overall choice in lower-leveled budget battles.

Price (2/2):
This is a very nifty item to pick up at close to 20k nps. Better to be prepared, right?

Bonus (0/1):
I can't think of anymore gnarly puns... *trollface*

Final Score: 5/10

Price/Power (2/5)
One icon away from being much more decent, but still nothing to really scoff over.

Countermeasures (2/5)
Decent combination of icons, there are many ways to cut down a small part of this but it is hard to block fully. The light defense is also handy, but if you are looking for a high number of light defense you are looking at the wrong place

Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
Scroll of the Scholar may be more practical.

This weapon was a lot more appealing when it was only 40,000NP.

Ancient Gnarled Wand has gone up considerably - at the time of this review there are none on the Shop Wizard.

Light-blocking Dual Duties are incredibly common, meaning this weapon has some serious competition.

Dusty Magic Broom and Air Faerie Crown represent the higher-end options for those who have not yet made the jump to the Hidden Tower's firepower, abandoning Dual Duties for power offense.

The new Fearsome Gladius sports a spectacular array of both offense and defense, so add that to the upper tier.

Jhudoras Cursed Sword is similar in price to Ancient Gnarled Wand, but trades in an icon of offense for 5 icons of Light defense.

Then there is Stocking Full of Coal, Amulet of Inevitable Betrayal, Deadly Pugio, Spyder Stone Necklace, Twisted Dark Dagger, and even a quite cheap Ultimate Negg Hammer.

The point I want to make is Light-blocking Dual Duties are amazingly common. Inflation has gotten the best of Ancient Gnarled Wand, but there are plenty of other options. Compare prices, compare the weapons' stats side-by-side, and don't feel compelled to buy the Light-blocking Dual Duty that spiked because of frequent recommendations. There are plenty of good Light-blocking Dual Duties out there.

Worst case scenario, most everyone should be able to afford Ultimate Negg Hammer, which is an 8-3 Light-blocking Dual Duty just like Ancient Gnarled Wand.

Price/power (0/5): Due to a relatively recent price increase, this is now much more expensive than either the Amulet of Inevitable Betrayal or the Sword of the Dead. It's also many times as expensive as the Ultimate Negg Hammer.

Tactical (4/5): Light blocking dual duties are rare at this level, and the icon types here aren't amazing. Earth and air are easily blocked by a myriad of shields and dark is blocked with the Golden Compass.

Bonus (0/1): This is one of the more powerful dual duties that block light, reminiscent of the Frozen Wand of Crystals and Cloudy Wand of Storms... neither of which is particularly relevant these days.

Closing remarks: Sword of the Deadand the Amulet of Inevitable Betrayal are notable alternatives. At this point, however, I'd recommend getting the Ultimate Negg Hammer instead.
