HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! My most favorite holiday!

Super congrats to sliced_ramen!! That's the one! That's the Neopet that was my favorite which I was rooting for the whole time. I see many, many others thought so, too!

2'nd and 3'rd place really surprised me! I totally expected tonitux would be in one of those spots, but no! I also see a huge chunk of my other favorites ended up as staff picks, including (but not limited to) Aviul's entry, Galbanino, h9d20, Mortogduke and cloudnine!

Honestly, they're all really great, so I definitely saw first hand that the competition was fierce!

So, congratulations to all who made it! So creative, you are!

"so don't forget to stay up!"

People from different timezones like me be like.

I don't understand why it has to be only a minute, some people can't be on pc at that time. Maybe multiple 1 minute times during the whole day of october 31? As usual disappointed when I see a feature that doesn't take into consideration that other countries outside us do in fact exist. =w=

Anyways, hope y'all have a good halloween! c;
woodstocki, October 31, 2024 12:57 AM NST
Congratulations to all the winners! My favourite out of these was MariaSklodowskaCurie. The other one I voted for didn't make the cut or the staff pick. My own entry didn't even make it into the second round, tiny sad. I suppose next year I should pick a more known character.

Although, can someone explain the first place to me? I don't get what the "what are they selling they're selling chocolates " references?
panavision3, October 31, 2024 1:01 AM NST
@woodstocki: I’m not sure it’s a pop culture reference - at least I don’t recognise it. If you look at the Grarrl, it’s just made of bones, so it’s so old! Then you have the giant Slorg orderly/caretaker on the side, and the setting is a shop. The caption is the Grarrl being so old, it can’t see well, asking “What are they selling?” and the orderly/caretaker yelling at the Grarrl that “they’re selling chocolate”. I like this costume, because it’s absurdly funny, and universal (old people be funny, what can I say)
omor03, October 31, 2024 1:08 AM NST
It seems like daily quests are more likely to reward spooky items today. I got the book Punchbag Bob Speaks, Creepy Darigan Citadel Background, and Knitted Poogle Plushie, as well as a Sho Codestone and neopoints. Can anyone confirm that they're also getting Halloween-themed items? It may just be a coincidence.

And congrats to sliced_ramen!! I voted for you lol. For anyone who doesn't get the reference, it's a SpongeBob character (apparently her name is Baby Prunes) and she's iconic for her appearance in the episode Chocolate with Nuts where SpongeBob and Patrick sell chocolate ^^
spock_sickle, October 31, 2024 1:11 AM NST
It's a spongebob reference in case someone doesn't know, from the infamous chocolate selling episode where the old lady looks like a walking corpse and they promise her that chocolate will make her live forever if it's put on her skin like sunblock.
jebduck, October 31, 2024 1:54 AM NST
Came to the comments to see what the costume was referencing because I definitely didn't get it. But I'm also never watched SpongeBob!
calamitycrow, October 31, 2024 2:19 AM NST
Darn it I wish there would have been an announcement about the site theme earlier! Like maybe the day before?? I definitely would have made sure to go and get it! I was already awake and everything, I just didn't know it was an option. Very disappointed. It would have been my default theme
josie, October 31, 2024 2:20 AM NST
Congrats to all the winners!
josie, October 31, 2024 2:22 AM NST
@calamitycrow, you didn't miss it. It's tonight right before midnight when you can get the theme.
woodstocki, October 31, 2024 3:04 AM NST
Thanks for explaining the reference! I got the vibe pananvision3 described, but that didn't tickle me (I'm caregiver for an elderly mentally handicapped lady in a wheelchair, perhaps it rang too close to home to be funny, to me this sounded like exasperation), so I assumed there had to be a reference I was missing that made it funny. I've never watched SpongeBob, so that makes sense.
zanzia, October 31, 2024 3:09 AM NST
Sad Oil paint on canvas didn't win; I thought that was very creative.
cisko116, October 31, 2024 3:13 AM NST
I don't understand the winner's customization at all - the dress-up, nor the reference, not the text. Can anyone explain it?
cisko116, October 31, 2024 3:13 AM NST
*nor
cisko116, October 31, 2024 3:15 AM NST
Nevermind, read it was some Spongebob reference. Disregard!
alessia, October 31, 2024 3:32 AM NST
I'm glad Marie Curie made the podium and Odysseus got a top10.

My favourite was "The last surviving coral" who didn't even make the cut despite the beautiful customisation and the important message he was bringing. I'm using this space to congratulate the creator, it was touching.

My pet didn't make the cut too, maybe I'll try next year even if I'm not into mainstream series which seems to be rewarded the most.
bonju, October 31, 2024 3:35 AM NST
OMG got third place!! First time in the podium!! Thanks to everyone who voted for Kyoshi, very proud of her outfit <3
Huge congrats to Mary Curie, the Duolingo Owl, and specially to my vote last round: the spongebob reference. It's very creative, it's well made, it's funny and it's even a bit creepy. 10/10 costume

My other final vote went to te ka/te fiti. Very creative idea and great execution! And last but not least, some shoutouts to other costumes I liked aswell: the dragonite, matilda wormwood, the kiss the mortog prince, lizbert from bugsnax, and odysseus!

Honestly great year, lots of amazing costumes. I love this event. Happy halloween everyone!
aura, October 31, 2024 6:23 AM NST
I've watched Spongebob before but not this particular episode, apparently. Still am glad Odysseus made it to 9th place. I had no trouble recognizing that costume, lol.
pastelsnexttome, October 31, 2024 7:19 AM NST
Congratulations to the winners!

My favorite didn't make it to the any of the lists If you're reading this, Caprella, your Magical girl transformation sequence outfit was first place in my heart!
jimmycarlos, October 31, 2024 7:24 AM NST
Congratulations to all of the winners of the costume contest! Thank you very much to whichever staff member picked my pet as a Staff Pick!
ninjakat1, October 31, 2024 7:33 AM NST
Oh well my MCR custom didn’t make it :/ oh well. Think I have some bangers for next year
0o0slytherinpride0o0, October 31, 2024 7:43 AM NST
Thank you to everyone who voted for my entry and for the staff pick! ^^

There were so many amazing entries! From the creativity of painstakingly assembling an outfit to bring a fictional character or even a scene to life (so to speak), to the ingenuity of crafting an outfit that tells its own story (usually accompanied by a pun). Really, the level of creativity was inspiring!

Even if you didn't receive a shootout (I'm also in this club!) or move on from the first round, I'm sure there are many people who voted for your entry and really appreciated it. (And I'm probably one of them! Unless it's a newish pop culture reference. I'm... getting a little old. Although I did do my best to look things up.) People just don't often take the time to give props to *all* the costumes they liked. So many put a smile on my face, though!

And thanks, as always, to JN for hosting this event again! It's so much fun and I look forward to it every year! Even if voting for 500+ entries is a little overwhelming.
mornaistare, October 31, 2024 8:13 AM NST
Congrats to the winners and staff picks!

But shoutout to caprella the magical girl and chocoshiiba the kelpie, they're winners in my heart c':
sacanth, October 31, 2024 8:53 AM NST
Congrats to winner/placer/show-er et al.!
I assumed the fossil Grarrl/chocolates was a reference to the prehistoric Advent calendar chocolates I'd heard about.
dusk, October 31, 2024 8:56 AM NST
Honestly sad that I didn't win - even as a staff pick - nor the Joy entry. I was rooting for Joy this whole time; It was super accurate and I just loved it to bits. I did vote for Marie Curie and the museum entries at a time, and Balto was another good one.

I thought my Knightmare was creative enough to make the next round, but I guess not (though it didn't help the pet's name was based off a cartoon character and I simply revamped the pet's character because I don't like the whole PC fodder thing). Eh, guess I'll go with Glalie from Pokemon next time. *shrugs*

Anywho, we'll see if that pesky avatar finally becomes mine! I already have the theme on a couple of accounts, but like others, don't see why TNT would want people to be up so late. That's almost 2am my time and I can't be up that late - even if my time zone "allows" it. MY SLEEP SURE WON'T! xD
dave - JN Staff, October 31, 2024 9:03 AM NST
@0o0slytherinpride0o0: Neopets is too popular again! We haven't had this "problem" of too many entries in quite a few years (we used to limit entries to the first 150 accepted back in the day!)

For next year, we're considering either a limit to the total number of entries we accept, or also some added rules to disqualify certain costumes and cut down the volume (e.g. no more "Pirate" or "Witch" or "Elsa" which we always get a handful of and never have a good chance of winning)
watmelmochi, October 31, 2024 9:25 AM NST
Congrats to all of those made it to the top 15 or got Staff picks! There was a lot competition this year, so managing to secure these placements is an achievement in and of itself!

My absolute favorite entry this year was the Duolingo Owl (spent a solid 5 minutes laughing at it when I first saw it), so it making it all the way to 3rd place is amazing! I also really loved the Spongebob CHOCOLATE meme too, so I'm really happy that both of my votes made it all the way to the podium!

Admittedly a bit gutted my entry wasn't able to even get past round 1, but I guess there's always next year.
vespiaries, October 31, 2024 9:41 AM NST
Previously Undiscovered Neopet will always be first in my heart
morganjoisle, October 31, 2024 10:36 AM NST
I LOVE the costume contest winner. Brings back nostalgic memories for me. sliced_ramen you are creative and made my day when I first saw your costume.
faellie_ridiculous, October 31, 2024 11:25 AM NST
Congrats to Chips on the win!! (I recognized the pet's name - all those years on the NCC...some things you never forget.)
shufflingbard, October 31, 2024 11:38 AM NST
Everyone's costumes are amazing! It's hard to pick a favorite! Happy Halloween everyone!
neolodgeism, October 31, 2024 12:50 PM NST
Congratulations to the winners! As a massive Spongebob fan I was very happy with the top pick. I think it's the perfect kind of costume - one that's referencing something, but which others don't need to know or pick up on the reference to understand and enjoy. It's funny as just an old lady with her care aide. It's also such a creative use of items. Really well done, well deserved.

Too many of the costumes are just depictions of characters from very niche/obscure pop culture fandoms, that are meaningless to anyone who doesn't get the reference. sliced_ramen took the trouble of making sure their costume was enjoyable for everyone.

Glad Duowlingo, Balto, Sebastian and the Mortog Prince all got recognition too. Shout out to Yusuf Dikec, Jareth, Bilbo Baggins, Nasty Leftovers, Wolverine and Cyclops - all great costumes!

@Dave - I think it's a good idea to limit the types of entries allowed, although it might be too complicated to try to come up with a comprehensive list of disallowed costumes. It might be easier to just curate the entries that are allowed in, and let people try again to enter if their first costume is rejected (even if you have to give another week after entries are closed so rejected entries can submit a new costume). I also think that costumes that were in the top 10 within the past 5 years shouldn't be allowed.
chocolatjellopudding, October 31, 2024 12:53 PM NST
Justice for Ted Lasso!!
chocolatjellopudding, October 31, 2024 12:58 PM NST
(coming back to say Ted's wasn't mine but I adored his costume so much)

Also loved Duolingo and I'm Just Ken. So much creativity this year! Congrats to all

I would very much prefer a little less easy costumes. Maybe it would be fun to do a themed version every year? Although I really do love super creative references every year
dave - JN Staff, October 31, 2024 2:04 PM NST
@neolodgeism: In our experience, people get quite upset (rightfully so) if we don't give a direct reason for a rejection--so if we go that route, a list of disallowed costume types would be required.
arisfaeries, October 31, 2024 2:07 PM NST
Congrats to the costume contest winners! I only have one question, tho...tonitux looks awesome, but what is the article of clothing it is wearing? I only see the cave background, the stalk eye contacts and the body shimmer makeup. The rules have always stated that they must be wearing at least one piece of actual clothing.... In the past when I submitted a pet dressed very similar to this, it was refused for not wearing a piece of clothing... Have the rules changed?
sliced_ramen, October 31, 2024 2:39 PM NST
AHHH I'M SO HAPPY Thank you everyone for the first place award! I've been entering in the JN Contest for the last couple of years and I haven't really customized much in the last year with the whole closet load bug, but this was truly a surprise. I'm very thankful to you all and wish you all the best!

I really hoped Dragonite would've gotten a nomination, but also I remember I voted for Balto.
josie, October 31, 2024 3:03 PM NST
@dave - I like the idea with certain costumes no longer being allowed. Maybe you guys could give us a theme, and we'll dress the pets according to that. I think this would give room to a lot of creativity.
asmodhieus, October 31, 2024 3:04 PM NST
I'm happy that Marie Curie got second and Kyoshi was third, they were easily my favorite, but HOW Odysseus was 9th? He looked so good! I thought it was really creative and original

Well looking foward to next year and I hope we see a lot of amazing and creative ideas like those, and not the same old costumes again again and again. I was really bothered to see some looks that were practically copies of things we saw in 2023.
dave - JN Staff, October 31, 2024 3:57 PM NST
@arisfaeries: Clothing is anything that goes on the pet's body, in this case the contacts and the body shimmer. Invisible pets with nothing applied to the pet is essentially what's against our rules.
neofin38, October 31, 2024 4:11 PM NST
@bonju Aw, thanks! Te Kā/Te Fiti was mine. I’m a little bummed I didn’t make the top 15, but tbh I’m surprised I even made it to the top 30. Long way from last year where I didn’t even make it past the first round.
cornflakes, October 31, 2024 4:45 PM NST
Happy Halloween to all y'all at JellyNeo!
britt4291, October 31, 2024 4:48 PM NST
Referencing spongebob for that costume was absolutely genius! Congrats!! I'm obsessed with it!!

Also, i NEEEDDDD a mothman!!
neolodgeism, October 31, 2024 5:00 PM NST
@Dave, I'm definitely not suggesting you don't tell people why their costume isn't suitable - people would need to be given a reason (I assumed rejected costumes were already given a reason. Maybe not?). I just think that y'all have been running this contest for long enough to know what's a good fit and what isn't.

I like the idea of doing themes instead, but unless it's a fairly broad theme you might end up with several nearly identical costumes, given the limitations of clothing items available.
kutie_piii, October 31, 2024 5:20 PM NST
@neofin38 I voted for Te Kā/Te Fiti every round, it was absolutely perfect!!

@chocolatjellopudding I did Ted Lasso, thank you so much for your support!! Bummed not to get anything after making it to the 3rd round but aw well, still love Ted Lasso
dave - JN Staff, October 31, 2024 5:49 PM NST
@neolodgeism: Oh yea, we definitely do rejection notices. But rejecting with a reason saying "we didn't think your costume was a good fit" doesn't go over as well as "our rules say no generic pirates, sorry". And I think that's more fair too--I'd rather leave the opining to our voters!
lucky300 - JN Staff, October 31, 2024 9:11 PM NST
Happy Halloween! 🎃👻🕷️ Congrats to all the Costume Contest winners!
teresa, October 31, 2024 9:50 PM NST
It is definitely a LOT, but I kinda like the idea of just still allowing everyone in and letting people on Jellyneo vote on everything like it was this year.

Maybe start round 1 voting earlier if you want to give more time to vote on them? I don't know other's feelings, but I didn't mind going through them all in chunks until I got through them all. That way no feelings get hurt over their entries not being accepted, and they still won't win if they are too generic? Maybe have a warning before they submit letting them know that generic themed pets (like pirate, etc) generally do not do well in the competition with encouragement to be creative?
I imagine most of them are very proud of what they came up with (and some genuinely do look very nice), and are proud to show it off whether they win or not.

Just my thoughts
zelda2727, November 2, 2024 2:25 AM NST
My Jools made it to the staff pick, thanks so much! She even got a couple of very demure and very mindful fan mails ^^ so it was totally enough for me to know that a few people got it and also enjoyed her costume

Aside from my favorites who placed in the top 15: Odysseus (amazing!), Duolingo (I laughed so much), Rod Serling (what you're about to watch...), & Weird Barbie (Yes Girl!), I feel compelled to list some of my many favorites because there were just too many amazing entries this year...

My Number one favorite of all the 500 plus entries was Corrupted Deet from the Dark Crystal - it was just so perfect!

Favorites of Pop Culture/Movie/TV: Rodents of Unusual Size (They do exist! XD), Coach Beard (Baybeh!), The Mask (we all wear masks, metaphorically speaking), Lucerys Velaryon (OMG his lil face this was the 2nd most funny entry next to Duolingo), Guillermo - What We Do In The Shadows, Ted Lasso (the Chia - the cookies, the visor and the hair!), Daredevil (all the things), Roogun, Joy, Jareth the Goblin King from Labyrinth, Moira Rose - Schitt's Creek, Nadja - What We Do In The Shadows, Cardi B, Geralt of Rivia, Witcher 4th Season, Gomez Adams, Both Dune Fremen, Hagrid, Casey Becker - Scream, Wolverine, Just Ken, Crowley, Thrandulin, Balrog, Snow White, Rapunzel - Tangled, Pee Wee, and Guzolene as Coma-Doof (Truly Spot on! Witness!!!)

Great Conceptual Type Costumes:
Black Widow Spider, Customer Service Job (LOL), Jack-o-lantern Candle, Magical Girl Transformation Sequence, Enchanting Kelpie (sooooooo pretty and haunting, nice job!!!), The Last surviving coral (so sad but true), The Horseless Headsman (LOL), Concerned Olympian Goddess, Unsafe Work Practices, Unknown Computer Virus, Nature reclaiming the body of a dead jubjub (very creative)

Favorite Neopets Releted:
Possession of Jhudora (but looks more like Illusen to me, I really liked it though), A voided Space Hero (had a cute retro vibe, like 80s anime ^^), Magical
zelda2727, November 2, 2024 2:29 AM NST
sorry sorry, my comment was too long and the end cut off:

Cont from previus:
Magical Marbles of Mystery, Cove Botter, and Faerie Xampher

Thank you everyone! I really enjoyed all of your creativity and effort. I'm very partial to the funny costumes so thanks to all those who made me laugh
zelda2727, November 2, 2024 2:51 AM NST
I'd love to see categories we could vote for in addition to overall voting.

I'm always amazed at how creative everyone can be, especially considering the limited number of NC items that we can use in our costumes. That was the hardest part for me, I found it difficult to find enough NP items that worked with my ideas.

And then it's always a big disappointment when the NP item you want to use is super duper expensive ***curse you steam jacket!*** It would be nice if we could create a costume in DTI and not actually own the items.
