Ratings - Bundle of Burning Birch Branches
Recommended for: Beginner Battlers
Price at Time of Rating: 30-50k

This weapon was given out during the 2022 Advent Calendar.

13-ish icons of damage (it looks like 15 but they're fractional) is a great starting point for beginner battlers, and you might have gotten this for free or be able to buy it for a decently low price. On top of that, its diverse icon spread makes it hard to fully block by getting around single-icon blockers and reflectors.

Its current peers are The Power of Friendship and Poisonous Mushroom Tea, with some slight variations in total icons and icon types between them}. Since prices can fluctuate quite a bit between these three 13-ish icon weapons, choose whichever one is the cheapest at the moment.

Keep an eye on our Weapon Recommendations: Beginner article for the most updated list of beginner weapon alternatives!

This weapon's price has been fluctuating due to plot speculation, so check its price against the other alternatives before buying!

This weapon will only be rated for Regular 1P/2P use, since it doesn't have any niche or league use.

Price (3/3): Currently one of the cheapest weapons for beginners. It'll be replaced relatively fast, but for most people that can't affort more this will more than do.

Power (5/5): The actual amount of icons thankfully remains the same, but it can be a bit confusing for beginners. That said, (almost) 13 icons is perfect for early battledome. This is more or less the standard for a weapon nowadays and the next upgrades tend to cost over 10 times this weapons cost when not inflated in price, so most of the time it's worth it. Also since this weapon is exclusively for early 1p the icon types don't really matter much.

Uniqueness (1/2): Poisonous Mushroom Tea and The Power of Friendship are the only near 13 icon multiuse weapons in its price range, so always get whichever one's cheapest.

Overall It's one of the best starting weapons one could ask for. If you've started then grab 2 of these or their equivalents and start hitting the S750 Kreludan Defender Robot with them until you've trained enough that a weapon upgrade might be worth it. Because of that its final rating is 9/10.

This weapon is a great example of how the Battle Log (sometimes) lies to you, and how it's important to look at the real, actual damage a weapon does to determine how good it is... and yet how sometimes a weapon can be worth using in spite of its deceitfulness.

Now, in today's age of Turned Tooth, and in the face of the much-superior Roxtons Trusty Bowie Knife, 12.8 icons may seem underpowered. Some of you will look at this and compare it to Roxtons Trusty Bowie Knife and say "well, both of these were released in 2022's Advent Calendar, and the Knife is way better, so this is garbage, sorry!" and then you'll throw it at the Money Tree. To that, the first thing I'll say is "Why are you trying to burn down the Money Tree???" but the second thing I'll say is "I don't think you're looking at this weapon from the right perspective."

The biggest draw here is the very low price. At the time of writing, it's not even 5k! This is an appreciable upgrade in damage over a Scroll of Ultranova for a very miniscule increase in price! If you're an absolute beginner and don't have the Neopoints or want to spend the Neopoints on something more expensive, this is a very compelling option for you, even if you didn't get it for free in the Advent Calendar. It's really not all that much more expensive than actually going outside, picking up a bundle of sticks, and lighting them on fire. I wouldn't recommend you actually do that, though.

To touch briefly upon the punch this birch bundle brings, I will don the cap of a NeoBoomer for one moment: Once upon a time, this kind of power would have cost a pretty penny. Just look at the older rev...

Price/Power (3/5)
I never thought I'd rate an item from the advent calendar as not strong enough when it is 12.8 icons average but... I feel like at this point there are many other event items or similar powered items you could be using instead. While not everyone will have a Void Blade or Turned Tooth laying around, you should at least have the Roxtons Trusty Bowie Knife released in the same year's advent calendar milling about...

Countermeasures (5/5)
Alternating between more fire and more earth does make it harder to block; and while an item like a Pirate Captains Hat could help reduce this; the chances of it stopping the pain here is rather small. Something will likely get through fairly effectively, and single icon healers will require luck to pull off.

Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
I mean, there are loads of decent high icon items these days you may already own that fit the bill here in terms of raw power. Multiple were mentioned before; Ironically I would likely suggest the "at least more easy to read in its dishonesty" Bowling Ball of Lost Cities as another option. What is this icon inflation madness anyway?

Other Points (2 Deduction)
I dislike dishonest weapons like this where it is hard to know the actual attacking damage on face value. Even if it isn't horrible, I just feel like I don't want to reward such behaviour. Don't get me wrong, branches is likely an 8; but I can't let it win.

Final Thoughts
My burning hatred of dishonest items shines brightly in my review.
