Ratings - Kiko Skull Pirate Hat
At the time of this review, Kiko Skull Pirate Hat has been hoarded by investors; its price currently rests at 40,000NP on the Shop Wizard.
However, let's ignore this spike in price and focus on this important question: Is Kiko Skull Pirate Hat a worthwhile beginner-level shield?
Kiko Skull Pirate Hat defends 5 Water icons, 5 Darkness icons, and 2 Physical icons, with the potential to block 2 additional Physical icons if Air icons are received. This weapon most closely resembles the beloved Leaf Shield, which blocks Earth icons in stead of Darkness icons.
When added together, Kiko Skull Pirate Hat has the potential to block up to 12 or 14 icons depending on the situation. Keep in mind that entry-level offense is quite powerful these days. Scroll of Ultranova offers 9.8 icons of offense, Scroll of the Fool offers a clean 10, and Scroll of Knowledge packs an 11-icon bunch, and all of these weapons are available at dirt-cheap prices these days. Suddenly, a dozen-icon blocker seems less powerful. Keep in mind that in order to justify the use of this weapon, it must block an equal or greater number of icons than an equivalent offensive rival. This effectively means the Kiko Skull Pirate Hat needs to block a double digit amount of icons whenever it is used, meaning that the Hat will need to be rocking its 5/5 Dark/Water defense at every use.
Finding a Dark/Water attack to block is easier said than done. As I mentioned in my Amulet of Altador review, a Dark/Water attack is rather unusual. (And if you really do find yourself encountering frequent Dark/Water attacks, why not just go the dual duty route with s...

|Value 3/3: This weapon is a great buy at a price significantly lower than the Leaf Shield (and likely to stay that way for a while too).|
Tactical 4/6: When 11-icon constants are the norm, and 8+ icon dual-duties are readily available, 13-icon shields just don't grant the same advantage they used to. This weapon has great stopping power against some popular weapons (shuts down dual Scarab Ring very effectively). The water and physical defense are nice, but the dark may not be so useful. I would've preferred to see some air defense given how common they are in popular low-level weapons.
Other 1/1: Great art, utility against some of the most popular low-level weapons available, and a low price. This is an excellent shield.

Offers the same level of defense as the Leaf Shield at a fraction of the price. Due to being a pretty easy to earn daily dare prize the price will be low for a very very long time. That makes it basically in-disposable price wise in my eyes.
Cuts back the Scarab Ring entirely and parts of the popular brightvale scrolls such as the Scroll of Knowledge. Another cut back is the Pike Pike and a great deal of physical inducing items... But at the same time it doesn't feel like it offers nearly as much broad usage.
Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
The aforementioned Leaf Shield works, but there are any number of other high rated shields you could consider using... But this one is pretty great.
Other Points (No Bonus)
The clo_ in the image name seems to suggest that this item was meant to be a wearable. The battledome world would have missed out on an awesome item if that was the case.

|Price/power (5/5): Amazing price for what it does. It's essentially a Leaf Shield with different icons.|
Tactical (4/5): Icon combination here is useful for killing the Scarab Ring and Jittery Jipple Pear Potion. The Ancient Gnarled Wand, Barbat Throwing Star, and Scroll of the Fool are all vulnerable to this hat. Unfortunately, it isn't as useful as the Leaf Shield.
Bonus (1/1): It's about time we got another Leaf Shield-like item.
Closing remarks: Alternatives include the Leaf Shield and the Patched Magic Hat. Or go for one of the all-species "full armours"--Shiny Shoal Shell Shield, Sophies Magic Hat, Studded Leather Cuirass, etc.
