10 icons for a pretty cheap price, I mean it is no Kiko Skull Pirate Hat, but it also isn't horrible.

Countermeasures (3/5)
Knocks a good deal of damage off some common items including Scroll of the Scholar, Throwing Cutlass and Frozen Water Daggers. However recently with the increasing variety of icon choice due to icon inflation, this shield is also easy to plan around.

Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
Personally I would rather pay the extra for a Shiny Shoal Shell Shield. For battlers with even more money you may consider moving to a Wanderers Cloak instead

It is good, not great, but good. Would be a lot worse if it was one of those items which is based on opponents intelligence rather then your own.

At a low rarity and a low price, Buckled Leather Tunic is an interesting option for new battlers.

This weapon is more effective for pets with 75+ intelligence. It is quite affordable for a pet to reach 75 intelligence; the Jellyneo Book Checklist provides a quick list of cheap books your pet has not read yet. :)

This weapon offers 10 total icons of defense for pets that meet the intelligence requirement; 10 total icons is a respectable amount for beginner level weaponry. Buckled Leather Tunic can offer solid resistance against Ridiculously Heavy Battle Hammer, Throwing Cutlass, Geraptiku Attack Leaf, Scroll of the Earth, and Spearmint among others.

This weapon is one that will be quickly outgrown, with superior options like Leaf Shield and Wanderers Cloak not far off, but it is a solid choice for the newest of battlers.

Price/power (5/5): Not bad at all considering that you can block 3 different types with 5 icons in one of the types for about 1000 NP. This is assuming, of course, that your pet has over 75 intelligence.

Tactical (3/5): You might want to have 1 more icon type, but the earth defense makes up for it, at least at this level. Air and water defense are both very useful, though unfortunately the water defense is a bit lacking.

Bonus (1/1): This is remarkably sturdy for something you'd expect to be much weaker.

Closing remarks: The closest upgrade is the Shiny Shoal Shell Shield, which is very overpriced right now due to the war. Wait for the price to drop before you get it.
