Rating:

At a Glance (1/3):
Raise this scorchstone in the air and summon an earth barrier, protecting your pet from 4.5 icons of air and 5 icons of darkness, totaling up to 9.5 total icons of defense!

In-Depth (1/4):
Air is pretty hard to block, as there are only a handful of beginner-level weapons that block a good chunk out like this does, such as Fitted Velvet Cloak, Florins Flask, and Basic Shield of Flight. The dark defense is a nice plus. However, it's a rather specialized shield that'll check weapons like Barbat Throwing Star, Jittery Jipple Pear Potion, and Ancient Gnarled Wand, but won't be too useful outside that. Relying on key dual duty weapons that round out coverage will be crucial to making the most out of this gem.

Price (2/2):
Costing only a mere ~800 nps, you might as well grab one. Even if it'll only be in your SDB for that one battle, it beats waiting until you have something like Ghostkershield or Hubrid Nox Memorial Shield to get this sort of iconage and power.

Bonus (1/1):
I always keep one of these in my SDB. Been that way ever since I was a youngin'. +1 for nostalgia.

Final Score: 5/10

Price/Power (3/5)
Offers a surprisingly well priced dark/air block with the interesting stipend of only being able to equip one at once. Why would someone do such a thing? Anyway, the power to price ratio of this item is remarkably good considering.

Countermeasures (1/5)
However the downfall of this is in the actual combination of icons, few weapons would truly be effected by this with items like the Amulet of Inevitable Betrayal being held back a bit, and the Barbat Throwing Star being stopped rather hard. However considering the limited use and application of this weapon I have to hold it down.

Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
The Hanso Charisma Charm is particularly nice at blocking dark and may just be a great alternative for helping stop those pesky dark icons.

Other Points (None)

Final Thoughts
May go up in value if we ever find any more powerful items of this combination, until then lets just have one in our SDBs but not use it.

Earthen Scorchstone has always been an interesting weapon. It defends 5 Dark and 4.5 Air icons for a total of 9.5 defensive icons. Despite the total defense being fairly low, it offers a pretty nice amount of protection against the two types that it blocks. This weapon can also be found for under 1,000NP, which is also a plus

Upon taking a quick look at all of the cheap weapons, (and eliminating the junk) I discovered these interesting facts:

This is currently the only weapon obtainable off the Shop Wizard that defends 5 Dark icons.

Also in terms of buyable weapons, the 4.5 Air icons this weapon blocks is second only to Basic Shield of Flight, which is barely, just barely, on the fringe of being considered useful. It is worth noting that Shield of the North Wind offers a defense of 4 Air icons.

In other words, the icon defenses this weapon offers are exceptional for its price. In order to get better defenses against these icon types, you would have to shell out a lot more NP for Hanso Charisma Charm, Hubrid Nox Memorial Shield, and the likes.

This sounds pretty nice, until you think about what how many popular weapons deal both Air AND Dark at this level. Barbat Throwing Star is really the only one that comes to mind. Using Earthen Scorchstone could only be justified if you can utilize both of its icon defenses, and chances are there won't be many situations for that to happen, seeing how it would likely take your opponent two weapons to generate Air and Dark offense simultaneously. It doesn't get much better in 1-Player, The Black Pteri is the only Air and Dark heavy 1-Player opponent I ca...
