Price/power (5/5): Available for a mere 400 NP at the time of writing. Defense doesn't get any more cost-effective than this.

Tactical (3/5): The obvious problem with a shield like this is that it attempts to cover a large number of icon types and depth is sacrificed in the process. This doesn't block anything fully, and probably isn't meant for that purpose. Instead, it's meant to counter opponents who decide to spread their attack over lots of icon types in the hopes of getting something through. For the most part, I'd recommend a more conventional shield, but this shield does have its uses. Incidentally, it's also very effective against the Scroll of the Scholar, Scroll of Knowledge, and Scroll of the Wise.

Bonus (0/1): Icon inflation has finally reached the shields.

Closing remarks: More conventional options include the Leaf Shield and Patched Magic Hat. For full armour-like shields, take a look at the Studded Leather Cuirass, Shiny Shoal Shell Shield, and the Solar Flare Shield.

The way I look at this item is simple. It offers a good deal of icons with an interesting spread but for some reason I wanted to avoid rating it. The reason is because the price was very high and I didn't want to rate it low just for that. Now however it is being given out by the Grave Danger and the price will dramatically fall, which is great.

Countermeasures (4/5)
This knocks a lot of damage off several items, especially now that there are the brightvale scrolls. Weapons like Scroll of the Scholar or Scroll of the Wise are totally cut down by this.

Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
Alternative wise there are many commonly loved shields like the Leaf Shield or Kiko Skull Pirate Hat.

Virtupets X-514 Super Shield is one of the most over-hyped shields in lower-level battling. The hype is apparent when looking at the price. This shield has an astonishing price of 70k at the time of review.

Virtupets X-514 Super Shield has a potential defense of 9.3 to 12 icons, an amount just high enough to be considered useful at the lowest level of play. This shield does not provide any serious coverage against any particular icon type, instead it offers a scattered defense across five different icon types. Its most focused defense ability is the ability to defend 3 Earth icons, which is nothing special considering how widely available Earth defense is at this level of play. The fractional Physical defense is another ugly sight.

Virtupets X-514 Super Shield can threaten the popular Scroll of Knowledge, but it will fail to block the entire attack. Because Virtupets X-514 Super Shield has such a scattered defense, the only way it will provide a significant amount of coverage is by defending against multiple weapons. Virtupets X-514 Super Shield will only provided effective defense against a scattered opposing attack. If the opposing attack focuses on only a handful of icon types, the attack will run right through X-514 Super Shield.

Also consider that standard starting level equipment starts off at 9+ icons these days. Both Ridiculously Heavy Battle Hammer and Scroll of Ultranova are available at a cost of almost nothing, and these weapons deal 9 and 9.8 icons respectively. These weapons' offense can practically match the total defensive ability of Virtupets X-514 Super Shield while still costing practically noth...
