In the class of good species healers, this is the one of the cheapest, in more ways than one...

Power: It should be obvious that this is powerful – a 50% heal is great, especially for pets that have outgrown other similarly-priced options. Unlike fixed healers like Helm of Recovery or Rejuvenating Jar of Brains, this grows with your pet – a big plus in my book.

Price: Currently, Elephante Unguent itself is easily buyable for under 85k. That’s already a great price, considering the species-agnostic Bag of Healing Dust is, as I’m writing this, around 9 million NP – over two full orders of magnitude greater.

Something else to consider is the price of the accompanying morphing potion. Since the Wheel of Excitement gives out Golden Elephante Morphing Potions on occasion, the price of that morphing potion is (currently) just around 10k. This means that you can get 9 million NP worth of power using under 100k. But it gets even better: you can use the lab ray to train your pet, and when it changes your pet’s species, you can cheaply change it back into an Elephante with a cheap Morphing Potion and continue using your healer. This is amazing if your battle pet is a lab rat with over 120 HP and you don’t feel like dropping a few million on the more expensive percentage-based healers.

Drawbacks/Other Options: Elephantes aren’t exactly the most popular pet. Ideally, if you’re considering using this, you’re going to like Elephantes, but if you don’t, you can instead opt for the other percentage-based species healers: Kacheek Life Potion, Gelert Healing Remedy, Bag of Lenny Healing Seeds...

Price/Power (5/5)
The Elephante Unguent is absurdly cheap at the moment for a 50% healer and is certainly an option if you have an Elephante and do not wish to spend the money on a Bag of Healing Dust.

Countermeasures (4/5)
Species healers/freezers are the one time when I feel that species items are more then justified. To have an item which can not only heal you a large chunk but can't heal the enemy if stolen? Priceless. The only downside is that because it offers only 50% it won't be as good as some healers are.

Alternatives Upgrades or Downgrades
Any of the other species healers such as the Kacheek Life Potion. Shop around for the best species healer/morphing potion combo you can find.

Final Thoughts
I am really rather surprised about just how far this has actually fallen price wise. But I suppose the combination of people not caring as much about battledome and an improved restocking system has helped.

Overview: Elephante Unguent is functionally the same as Bag of Healing Dust and Gelert Healing Remedy, but you have to have an Elephante to use it.

The Good: Based on my price check today, it's currently the cheapest of the "big three" species healers, and about 1/100 the cost of Bag of Healing Dust.

The Bad: While Kacheeks are just shy of being the most popular Neopet, and Gelerts are still in the top 10 for popularity, Elephantes are currently ranked 29th in popularity by number. Chances are you probably don't like Elephantes as much as you'd like other Neopets.

The Ugly Truth: I'm giving this the same ranking I gave Gelert Healing Remedy, which is a solid 8. If you happen to pbe part of the minority that likes the looks of the Elephante, then you'll have access to the best budget healer in the game.

Let me tell you a little story about the Elephante Unguent. In 2003, during the Champions of Meridell War, my pet Sioux64 was undergoing lab training. Morphing Potions were still cheap thanks to Snow Faerie quests, and while I preferred my main pet to remain a Kougra, I wanted my battle pet (Sioux) to gain as much HP as possible. The lab, of course, causes species changes galore, but I did gain the extra HP I needed. For the war, I used this in combination with cheap Elephante Transmogrification Potions, Sinsis Sword, and Elephante Stunray to amass 220 points for the victorious Darigan Citadel.

As such, while Elephantes are ugly as sin, and much more expensive to morph into than they were in 2003, this is still a decent healer, especially if you are lab training and get stuck as an Elephante for a while. Alternatives include Kacheek Life Potion and Gelert Healing Remedy.
